A little bit of history
By 1997 Leyland had been bought by Volvo and the Olympian design had been progressively updated. Alexander had also introduced the Royale development of its R type body.
The result was the Royale bodied Volvo Olympian, the ultimate development of the step-entrance British double decker. Lothian bought two batches, regarded by many as very refined buses, 285 being numerically the very last step-entrance bus bought by the company.
It operated on the last day of regular step-entrance service when the last examples were withdrawn from service 23.
285 was operated from Longstone depot throughout its operating life before being transferred to the heritage fleet.
